What does Mercury retrograde mean?

Three or four times a year, for about three weeks each time, Mercury appears from Earth to move backward through the zodiac. It does not actually reverse; Earth and Mercury are moving at different speeds, and the view changes as one passes the other. Popular astrology blames these weeks for missed messages and broken devices. The Vedic tradition reads a retrograde planet differently, as gaining strength rather than going wrong. AstraFlow does not send warnings about it; if you like, use the weeks to revisit, revise and reconnect.

What is happening in the sky

Mercury circles the Sun in about 88 days, much faster than Earth. Each time it swings between Earth and the Sun, its position against the stars seems to slow, stop and slide backward for a few weeks, then turn forward again. Every planet except the Sun and Moon shows this effect from Earth; Mercury’s are simply the most frequent.

Where the reputation comes from

Mercury is the planet of speech, trade and travel in most traditions, so its backward look became a shorthand for things going wrong in those areas. The reputation belongs to popular culture rather than to anything measured, and it can make ordinary delays feel like a sign.

How Vedic astrology reads a retrograde planet

In classical Vedic strength reckoning, a retrograde planet gains motional strength, called cheshta bala, because it is then at its nearest to Earth. A retrograde Mercury is read as turned inward and more intense, not broken. The emphasis is on reconsidering rather than on mishaps.

What AstraFlow does, and a prompt to use

AstraFlow does not build readings or alerts on Mercury retrograde. Today reads the Moon, and Patterns follows the slow movers: Jupiter, Saturn, Rahu and Ketu. Nothing in the app will tell you to postpone a decision because of Mercury.

If you want to use the weeks anyway, try one line a day: “What am I revisiting, and what do I want to say differently this time?” Note what you did and how it went, as separate lines.

Questions about this guide.

Should I avoid signing contracts during Mercury retrograde?

AstraFlow does not use a planet’s position to tell you when to sign, buy, marry or leave. Read contracts carefully every week of the year; that is good practice, not astrology.

Does AstraFlow track Mercury retrograde?

Not as a reading or an alert. Mercury’s position is part of the full chart calculation, but the app’s readings focus on your Moon and the slow-moving planets.
